By 9 o’clock, everyone was outside the lodge, ready to explore the Lava Tube and tackle the hike. A shuttle would take them to the trailhead for the tube. Casey had explained that there was a short walk to the steps leading down to the tube.

“Once you get to the end of the cave, there’s a perfect spot for pictures where a shaft of sunlight comes in,” said Casey. “The cave itself isn’t too deep, so feel free to explore. Then we head to the Rings Loop Trail, also called the Hole-in-the Wall Trail. It’s 1.3 miles and not too difficult, but you’ll see some spectacular rock formations.

“What’s the trail rating?” Sadia asked.

“You must be a hiker,” said Casey with a smile. “It’s rated as moderate and starts out very flat. Some of the steeper sections have rings attached to help you pull yourselves up. And I’ll be there to help. Now . . .”

As Casey went on, Michiko stood listening by herself. Kate and Sophia were still a threesome but now it was Lucas who tagged along wherever they went, sticking to them like superglue. He’d never been this interested in them before, so why was he swooping in to steal her friends now? Michiko turned her face away from the chattering trio. She tried to squash her feelings of jealousy, admitting to herself that with Lucas close by, at least he might be able to help if either of them was in trouble. She decided to keep an eye on them, but from a distance.

“He’s giving me the cold shoulder too,” someone whispered.

Sadia stood beside her, looking bummed. “I thought Lucas was a good friend. Suddenly, we’re not, and his besties are now your ex-best friends. Weird trip, huh? What say we don’t give a hoot and hang out?”

Michiko couldn’t agree more. “Sure has been. Let’s do it. I’m looking forward to the hike.”

She used to go hiking with Hiro back in Japan. Her favorite had been the hike up Mt. Fuji, Japan’s tallest mountain, only to be attempted during the hiking season of July and August. It had been a tough and grueling hike but totally worth the effort once they got to the top. As was customary, she’d stamped her hiking stick at one of the stations and sent a postcard to herself back in the States. It had been waiting for her when she returned. Kate and Sophia preferred malls to mountains. Quit it, she interrupted her thoughts. Sadia was right—she had to stop thinking about her ex-best friends.

“Me too!” said Sadia, her eyes sparkling. “The Rings Loop is supposed to be super fun! I saw a short documentary about it, and I can’t wait to try it!”

At this Michiko beamed. “I saw it too—on YouTube, right?”

Sadia nodded. “Finally, we get a real workout.”

How had she ever thought Sadia was horrible without getting to know her? She was pretty cool and liked at least one thing that she did. Maybe she could make a new friend and salvage this cursed trip, after all.
